The Middle without Boundaries? The Fourth Middle-Period China Humanities Conference
From May 28 to 31, 2026, the Fourth Middle-Period China Humanities Conference was successfully held at City University of Hong Kong. The first three in this conference series were held at Harvard University, Leiden University, and Yale University, respectively; this was the first time the conference was held in Asia. With the generous support of the Tin Ka Ping Foundation, Yiwen Li, Chia-hui Lu, and Lik Hang Tsui of the Department of Chinese and History at City University of Hong Kong, together with colleagues from the department, hosted the conference. Three overseas scholars—Tomoyasu Iiyama from Waseda University, Jason Protass from Brown University, and Lei Xue from Oregon State University—also joined the conference organizing committee.
The conference received a total of 420 applications. Following a rigorous selection process by the organizing committee, 159 papers were ultimately accepted, bringing together scholars from more than ten countries and regions to Hong Kong. Mr. Tin Wing Sin, Chairman of the Tin Ka Ping Foundation, also attended the opening ceremony.
The conference featured 56 discussion panels, 2 roundtable sessions, and 1 concluding forum for summary and reflection. In addition to the on-site discussions, the conference organized three field trips along different routes to explore the history and culture of Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Palace Museum, the Hong Kong Museum of History, the Art Museum of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the MTR Sung Wong Toi Station all generously supported the conference’s field trips.
