Abstract
The Ningbo Museum, designed by the Chinese architect Wang Shu and opened in 2008, is a museum of regional artistic and cultural history round the eponymous city in China’s Zhejiang Province, some two hundred kilometres south of Shanghai. It presents itself both as a “citizens’ museum” (百姓博物馆) with a broad-based educational programme, and as a centre for cultural-history research; and the design of its architectural shell has also been determined by historical considerations. In dialogue with the literati painting tradition of landscapes the museum architecture displays a direct correlation with nature and comments on urban destruction in contemporary China. The lecture will analyse Wang Shu’s use of demolition material from destroyed buildings in regional villages in order to erect his museum architecture and will put it into the intellectual frame of the concept of “spolia” in order to discover its historical significance.
