CAH Heritage Workshop:
Bringing History to Life: The Technique of Kuancai
傳承歷史:款彩漆工藝工作坊
(特邀《我在故宮修文物》專家親授)

Join the Department of Chinese and History for a one-day workshop exploring kuancai, also known as Coromandel lacquer—the art of "carved polychrome." These intricate lacquer screens flourished along China's southeastern coast during the late seventeenth century, quickly becoming a major hit both domestically and across European markets. The workshop will kick off with a lecture from Dr. Xialing Liu, who will unpack the fascinating global history of this technique. Then, under the guidance of Mrs. Hua Chunrong, you'll get to try your hand at the craft itself during a hands-on session. You'll learn the processes of carving, layering, and coloring lacquers.
