Biography
Trained as a historian of early medieval China, Calvin studied for a BA and an MPhil in Chinese History at the University of Hong Kong before receiving a MA in Cultural History at the University of Manchester, where he worked on the unexplored papers and book collection of the sinologist Edward H. Parker (1849-1926), which inspired him to turn to the publishing history in modern China and later pursue his current doctoral study in modern Chinese history at the University of Edinburgh. His doctoral dissertation aims to examine the international book circulation and English-language publishing in East Asia from mid-nineteenth to early twentieth century, and explores the global and regional, cultural and social networks of treaty ports and colonies in East Asia, in particular Hong Kong, Shanghai, Yokohama, Singapore, and Tientsin.
Before joining the City University of Hong Kong in 2006, Calvin taught as a course tutor in the Department of Chinese (now School of Chinese) at the University of Hong Kong from 2001 to 2004.
Apart from lecturing and tutoring, Calvin enjoys running, swimming, playing basketball, reading fictions and Japanese comics, roaming bookstores and cemeteries, and social-networking.
